Surfing in India can still be called a new sport. In many countries surfing has been established for decades, some for over a century and other areas, surfing and wave riding has been in existence for many centuries. While the coastal fishermen of India have certainly been taming the ocean and riding the waves back to shore after fishing, recreational surfing in India of waves is very new.
Surfing in India is following the lead of many other Asian countries and in the early stages of growth and development. No doubt the coming 5 – 10 years will see a huge change and dramatic rise of surfing in India with an increase in surfers, increase in surf locations
, increase in surf knowledge, increase in popularity and understanding of the sport and a general growth and development of the whole surf industry as a whole.
Surfing throughout the world has been growing for many years, expanding in to new countries, becoming more accepted, known and understood even in the established countries and become a far more professional international industry than even 10 – 20 years ago.
A huge boost to surfing internationally was the inclusion of surfing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The International Surfing Association, the international governing body of surfing – as recognised by the International Olympic Committee, has been running World Championships for many categories and divisions for many years. Each year there is a new record number of athletes and countries competing.
Indica Surf School dreams of in the very near future being able to have a strong impact and positive influence on surfing in India so that we can have Indian representatives competing on the ISA World Stage in the ISA World Surfing Championships. We also dream that also in the short term, we can have Indian athletes competing in international competitions around the world.
